Welcome! I’m Michael Bodkin and I’m the founder of LightHouse Financial Group.  Before you begin working with a financial planner, it’s important you learn a least a little bit about them.

Education & Work Background

I’ve earned both my Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Business from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. In addition to being educated at Laurier, I also taught first and second year business students for four years while working towards my degrees. I taught both as a lab instructor and later lectured as a professor. I’m proud to have been recognized by the university on multiple occasions for my teaching excellence and passion that I brought to the classroom. Areas that I taught include the Canadian Investment Environment, the Canadian Tax System, Corporate Finance, Entrepreneurship, Accounting and Managerial Statistics. I also tutored at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

I had the privilege of working for Canadian tech giant Research In Motion (now BlackBerry) in Waterloo on the research and development side of the company. That gave me a deep appreciation for the pace of business and the need to keep up with advancements in technology and demographics trends. There are lots of “shiny gadgets” on the market these days, but for security and productivity you can still count me among the “crackberry” crew.

Since 2011 I’ve worked as an Independent Financial Planner. I presently hold 3 licences. I’m a Mortgage Broker, licensed to offer mortgage solutions to clients via Dominion Lending Centres (YBM Group #11129). I hold my Mutual Fund License with PEAK Investment services, and I am also licensed to offer Life & Health Insurance with PEAK. (see more about this on the legal page)

In addition to being a full-time financial planning , I also teach part-time at Sir Sandford Fleming College and Trent University. I’ve recently taught, Brand (Trent University), Sales Management, New Venture Creation, International Marketing and International Market Research & Entry Strategies and Innovation in the Global Marketplace (Fleming College).

Personal Life

In my personal life, I enjoy tinkering with just about anything technological, from automatic lighting systems to home media systems, and telecommunications devices. I also consider myself a bit of a gamer, particularly strategy games like StarCraft, or Catan/Cities & Knights. I also enjoy a friendly game of Euchre and Poker. Always looking for new competitors to challenge in a friendly match!

I enjoy listening and playing music; I play several brass instruments including trombone and the slide trumpet (soprano trombone). As a former Lifeguard and aquatic instructor I like to swim when possible to try and stay in shape.

Working with Youth is particularly close to my heart. Our culture has become such a poor environment to cultivate the enormous potential each and every youth has. I try and make a difference by volunteering weekly with youth ministry as well as sponsor the MikeTheFinanceExpert Investment Challenge at Weldon and Fenelon Falls high schools each year. I’ve also had the privilege of serving as an Elder, Board of Director and Treasurer at my local church.

I am also happily married to my wife Julie. I’m grateful to Julie for helping me to do all that I do, as I couldn’t be as successful without her help. We’re blessed with two great young kids. It’s amazing to see just how much energy they have. They certainly keep us on our toes!  (it’s too bad you can’t bottle that excess energy up!)
