Critical Illness25Developing a critical illness is usually a greater risk than death.  In Canada, we have more support than our friends south of the border, yet many treatments for critical illnesses (such as cancer, MS, heart attack, stroke, organ transplant, etc.) are either unaffordable or have a long waiting period. With Critical Illness Insurance, a lump sum is paid directly to you (tax-free) should you be diagnosed with one of the roughly two dozen covered conditions. This money can be used in any way you wish; for treatments, accessible renovations, mortgage costs, etc. Critical illness can be less expensive than disability insurance, but the coverage is somewhat narrower.
